I use the Spic and Span powder in silver polishing. About a 1/4 cup sprinkled in very hot water in a sink lined with aluminum foil. I soak the silver for a few minutes. Sometimes a little silver polish is necessary for stubborn spots. It is particularly effective for silver that has ornate decoration like Repousse. Contrary to one's initial reaction, this process doesn't seem to harm the silver. Mine is about 100 years old and still going strong. It is difficult to find the original Spic and Span powder. The grocery stores don't carry any powder, and the local hardware stores only have the "heavy duty" powder. I like it for floors as well.
