Georgia Pacific

The Georgia-Pacific company has been manufacturing top quality products since its inception in 1927 when it first started as a small lumber supplier out of a single building. As with quite a few long-standing, profitable, large companies, Georgia-Pacific has been through massive growths, name changes and many acquisitions through the years.

Founded in Augusta, Georgia, Georgia-Pacific was known back then as the Georgia Hardwood Lumber Company, a hardwood lumber wholesaler. Before growing to more than 300 Georgia-Pacific locations globally, the Georgia Hardwood Lumber Company operated five sawmills in the South in 1927. By the 1940s, the company was the largest supplier of lumber to the United States armed forces during World War II. By the end of that decade, Georgia Hardwood Lumber Company acquired a facility out West in Bellingham, Washington and by 1948 became known as The Georgia-Pacific Plywood & Lumber Company. In 1956, they changed their name to Georgia-Pacific Corporation. By 1963, they entered the tissue business and by 1968 they exceeded $1 billion in sales.

Although Georgia-Pacific was a profitable business, they gave back to the communities. In 1969, they donated California redwood groves to the public. The groves were valued at more than $6 million. By 1973, they doubled their business in five years to over $2 billion. By the 1980s, they moved their company headquarters back to Georgia from Oregon and started a scholarship programs for employees' children and continued giving back to the communities with safety programs and protecting endangered woodpeckers on their lands. At the turn of the century, Georgia-Pacific acquired Brawny, Quilted Northern, and Dixie. The year 2002 marked their 75th year in business. By the following year, the company surpassed $20 billion in sales.

With all of their success, Georgia-Pacific as a lumber company understands the importance of forest responsibility and are environmentally conscious and careful in the use of their natural resources. They have been rewarded with numerous sustainability awards throughout the years. The company practices sustainable forestry and work hard to protect wildlife and their habitats. Georgia-Pacific continually strives to expand into markets and industries while keeping an eye out for growth opportunities with its loyal customers with no plans of slowing down.
