Which insect repellent is the best?

According to Consumer Reports, Off! Deep Woods Insect Repellent is one of the best insect repellents on the market today. With 25% of DEET as the main active ingredient, it is rated as excellent against repelling mosquitoes as well as ticks. This repellent protects users against the Aedes mosquitoes, the daytime biters that carry the Zika virus. It is also effective against the Culex mosquitoes, the nighttime biters that cause the West Nile virus. Off! Deep Woods also provides protection against deer ticks that carry Lyme disease as well as other biting insects.

What is the most effective mosquito repellent?

Don’t shy away from DEET. DEET has gotten a bad rap since it is not made with natural ingredients, so consumers assume it is bad. Not true. Nothing repels mosquitoes like DEET. It also protects against ticks, so if you will be in a woodsy or grassy area camping out, watching fireworks, or just hanging out in your own backyard, an insect repellent that contains at least 20% of DEET would be most effective against mosquitoes and ticks. Rule of thumb: the more DEET an insect repellent contains, the better it protects. DEET has been approved for sale on the market since 1946 and is safe for children over 2 months old. For those under 2 months of age, consider using netting over a baby stroller to shield your infant from mosquitoes and other bugs. Insect repellents that contain at least 20% of Picaridin are also highly effective against mosquito bites. Picaridin is fairly new to the insect repellent market and has been approved for sale in 2005. Like DEET, it is also a synthetic repellent but studies still have not confirmed if it will protect against ticks as well as DEET. Though, it will not harm clothing or other fabric materials like DEET.

Is DEET harmful to your body?

The short answer is: no. Studies have shown that there is no correlation between DEET and any toxic side effects from use on the skin. There is no evidence that links the use of DEET products with nervous system harm. In fact, the CDC recommends the use of DEET containing insect repellents. As with any chemical, ingesting it will cause vomiting, nausea and stomach issues. Use only on your skin; not in your mouth. If you experience a skin rash or other rare adverse effects, wash treated skin immediately with soap and water and seek help from a healthcare professional. Always assist a child with bug spray application to ensure safety measures from accidental ingestion or eye injury. Still afraid of DEET? Perhaps consider the harmful viruses that can be transmitted by bug bites and decide if the infected pests are more of a danger to your health or the topical insect repellent. As with any topical skincare product, prior to purchasing or using, ensure that it is approved by the EPA and registered for toxicology safety.

What is the best natural insect repellent?

Natural may be better when it comes to food, but it might not be the best choice when it comes to insect repellent sprays and wipes. Insect repellents with at least 40% of lemon eucalyptus oil extract as the main active ingredient will repel mosquitos, but not ticks. Safer to use on clothing and seating fabric, oil of lemon eucalyptus repellent will not damage materials like DEET could. Younger children should steer clear of this product. Because of its eye irritant properties, this type of insect repellent is not recommended on children under 3 years old. Instead, dress younger children in long pants and long sleeve shirts for bug bite protection.

How long does bug repellent last?

If there is no expiration date on the bottle then the answer depends upon the type of insect repellent and its main active ingredient. For instance, DEET products will last for quite a few years and requires no expiration date on the container. After about 3 years, though, check for changes in color, scent, or texture of the product, it may be time to replace if something does not seem right.

How often should I apply bug spray?

Follow the usage directions on the bottle and never exceed the maximum number of applications that is suggested on the label. Depending upon the type of insect repellent, some will last for 2 hours while others claim to be effective for as many as 10 hours before any reapplication is needed. As with all insect repellents, never spray directly onto the face. Spray your hand to apply to exposed skin on and around the face and always assist children with applications. Never apply to skin under clothing. To remove the insect repellent, bathe with soap and water as soon as you return indoors.

How does bug spray work?

Bug spray, insect repellent lotion and towelettes simply mask your body’s scents and smells. Body soap, hair products, perfume and clothes detergent lingers on your body and emits a scent that acts as an invitation to bugs announcing you are there. Ready for their next meal, the bugs use their strong scent receptors to find you. Insects even smell the carbon dioxide from our exhaled breath. Applying insect repellent on your skin as well as spraying your clothing helps mask your scent and become nearly undetectable to bugs, almost like you’re wearing an invisibility cloak. The insect repellents do only that, repel the bugs, but not kill them.

Are there any insect repellent alternatives to bug spray?

You have probably heard it all. Drinking apple cider vinegar, rubbing garlic on your skin, stuffing your belt loops and pockets with dryer sheets, even taking Vitamin B supplements all will ward off insects. Unfortunately, none of that is true. If you really want to try and forgo the insect repellent and do things au naturale, try using fragrance-free cleansers at the very least. Avoid standing water; it is a breeding ground mecca for mosquitoes. Surround yourself with lemongrass oil and oil of lemon eucalyptus. Cedar, thyme, clove, rosemary, lavender, mint, patchouli, and of course, citronella oil are all also considered natural insect deterrents. How well do they work? Let’s just say, the supply outweighs the demand for these products for good reason.
