Cold Packs

When you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of being injured, you will most likely want to use a Cold Pack for some relief. A cold pack is ideal for new pain or an injury by slowing down the blood circulation to the area. Reduction of blood flow will decrease the swelling and inflammation and will lessen the pain by muscle spasms. If the area is bruised or swollen, cold packs are great therapy.

When is the best time to start your cold pack therapy? The best time to start using your cold pack is within 24 to 48 hours after an injury occurs. Use cold packs for the treatment of pain from bumps and bruises or strains and sprains. It is best practice to use your cold pack for about 20 minutes on the injured area, then take the cold pack off for 10 minutes, and so on.

Of course, if you happen to have recurring pain, heat therapy will help relieve that tenderness. Heat brings blood to the injured area and will actually support healing. When heat is applied to the skin, it opens up the blood vessels and increases blood flow. When increasing blood circulation it supplies oxygen and other nutrients to relax sore muscles, tendons, and ligaments while easing joint pain. If you have chronic muscle spasms or joint stiffness, heat therapy of 20 minutes or less is ideal since it will allow for an increase in range of motion and flexibility in addition to alleviating pain. It is important to always consult your doctor if you are unsure, have diabetes, or poor circulation before following a heat therapy regimen.

Temperature-related therapies are an ideal option as they are not addictive like painkillers and are not invasive like other treatments.
