What is antibacterial soap?

Wikipedia states antibacterial soap is a soap which contains chemical ingredients that purportedly assist in killing bacteria. The majority of antibacterial soaps contain triclosan, though other chemical additives are also common. Triclosan and triclocarban are the most common compounds used as antibacterials in soaps. However, other common antibacterial ingredients in soaps include benzalkonium chloride, benzethonium chloride, and chloroxylenol. Claims that antibacterial soap is effective stem from the long-standing knowledge that triclosan can inhibit the growth of various bacteria, as well as some viruses and fungi. The effectiveness of products branded as being antibacterial has been disputed by some academics as well as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In September 2016, the FDA banned the use of nineteen chemicals frequently used in such products due to this and insufficient information on the long-term health effects of their use.

What are the pros and cons of antibacterial soap?

Blank Children’s Hospital in Iowa lists the most popular pros and cons of using antibacterial soap.

Pros of Antibacterial Soap:

1. Antibacterial cleaning products are effective in healthcare settings (hospitals, nursing homes and other medical facilities) where patients’ immune systems are weakened.
2. Hand sanitizer that has at least 60 percent alcohol levels is an effective alternative when a person doesn’t have access to soap and hot water.
3. Antibacterial cleaning products are effective for cleaning tasks in veterinarian offices and homes with pets.

Cons of Antibacterial Soap:

1. The FDA has said there is “no evidence” that antimicrobial soap products keep people healthier than regular soap. The agency now requires manufacturers of antibacterial products to prove the chemicals are safe for long-term daily use and that they do a better job of keeping people well than washing hands with regular soap and water.
2. Overuse of antibacterial products can reduce the amount of healthy bacteria on a person’s skin, which can make antibiotics less effective in the fight against new strains of bacteria, called superbugs.
3. Using antibacterial soap or hand sanitizer can cause people to think they do not have to wash their hands as thoroughly or frequently.

When should I wash my hands?

Dirty hands are a big culprit in transmitting diseases. Typically humans carry tens of thousands to millions of bacteria on their hands. We know hand washing is the single most important factor in preventing the spread of infectious diseases. Always wash before meals and preparing food, after using the bathroom, and after being with someone sick. Washing your hands with soap and water does not actually kill most bacteria. What soap does is help remove the bacteria but not kill them, says Medical Discovery News.

Which hand washing method kills the most germs?

Global News in Canada reports that it takes about 15 to 20 seconds of vigorous hand washing with soap and water to effectively kill germs, according to the CDC. But the Michigan study found people were washing up for about six seconds on average. Scottish scientists say there’s a six-step technique that’s the most effective at killing bacteria. It’s endorsed by the World Health Organization and is touted as better than the one advocated by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, according to new findings out of Glasgow Caledon University in Scotland. They compared the WHO’s six-step process next to the CDC’s three-steps and found that the lengthier technique killed more germs, but it took longer: about 43 seconds compared to 35. Here is the full six-step (steps 3 through 8) proper hand washing technique according to WHO:

1. Wet hands with water
2. Apply enough soap to cover all hand surfaces
3. Rub hands palm to palm
4. Right palm over left dorsum with interlaced fingers and vice versa
5. Palm to palm with fingers interlaced
6. Back of fingers to opposing palms with fingers interlocked
7. Rotational rubbing of left thumb clasped in right palm and vice versa
8. Rotational rubbing, backwards and forwards with clasped fingers of right hand in left palm and vice versa
9. Rinse hands with water
10. Dry thoroughly with a single use towel
11. Use towel to turn off faucet
12. And your hands are safe

Is foam soap as effective as liquid soap?

Today reports that foam soaps may not be as effective as liquid soaps in eliminating bacteria that can lead to infection. The research team suggests foam soap may be less effective than liquid soap because it comes out of the pump as a lather, whereas the liquid soap lather is built up in the process of hand washing. Also, the amount of soap in foam is markedly less in a single pump than is found in its liquid counterpart. Dr. Guenter Kampf, a hand hygiene expert at the University of Ernst in Germany, told Reuters Health that because the study was small and the methods weren’t rigorous, more robust research is needed to confirm the findings. In the meantime, he said, “For domestic use it may not make a difference whether a foam or liquid soap is used because cleaning of the hands is the main purpose of washing them.” The site added, whether you use foam soap or regular liquid, what's important is that you wash your hands!
