Best Ways to Clean Nalgene Bottles

Keeping Your Nalgene Bottle Clean

Nalgene bottles are great for a variety of activities. An eco-friendly alternative to disposable plastic water bottles, they are durable and leak proof and should last you a long time as long as you care for them properly. Washing them immediately after use and letting them dry is the best method, but that doesn’t always happen (at least not in my house). I’ve outlined a few ways to clean your Nalgene bottle below.

The easiest way to clean your Nalgene bottle with very little work on your part is to put it in the dishwasher. Most of them are dishwasher safe, but check the manufacturer’s instructions. The best place for it is on the upper rack away from the heating element, as the lid may not withstand the heat as well as the bottle itself. If the upper rack of your dishwasher will not accommodate the size of the Nalgene bottle, not to worry; there are other cleaning options.

Soak In Warm, Soapy Water:
Put the water bottle in a sink filled with warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap and let it soak. If you’d prefer, you can also put the warm water and soap in the bottle to soak for a few minutes. Shake it to distribute the soapy water, rinse really well and let it dry. This works especially well if you only use your bottle for water and non-staining liquids.

As long as you use a small amount of a mild soap, there shouldn’t be any soapy taste left in the bottle. However, if you’d rather skip the soap you can use warm water and lemon or warm water and baking soda to clean the bottle.

Cleaning Tablets or Disinfectant Glass Cleaner:
If you want a professional cleaning product to ensure that you bottle is properly disinfected, you can buy water bottle cleaning tablets or new technology disinfectant glass cleaner. For the cleaning tablets, simply add the tablet to water and allow it to dissolve in the bottle. Give it a good shake and then an equally good rinse. Denture cleaning tablets are an inexpensive substitute for water bottle cleaning tablets. For $10 you can get a pack of 100 denture cleaning tablets while you may pay anywhere from $5 – $13 for 12 water bottle cleaning tablets. Just make sure to look for a name brand denture cleaning tablet that with extra strength cleaning power. As for the new technology disinfectant glass cleaner, you can simply add the cleaner to the bottle and allow it to sit for 10 minutes for total disinfection  and then thoroughly rinse with water.

With all of these options, you should be able to keep your Nalgene bottle clean so you can get a lot of use out of it.
